How to Host a Safe Birthday Party

When Lynn Morley planned her son's first birthday party she knew what she wanted. The Belton, Missouri, mom envisioned a small get-together with family surrounding her son Alexander as he blew out the big number one candle atop his cake. What Morley didn't plan on is her son being so enchanted with the flames that he lunged forward in his high chair to grab the candle. "I pulled it back just in time," recalls Morley. "My husband and I blew it out for him." That was three years ago. As Morley prepares for her second son's first birthday party, she doesn't plan on lighting any candles.
"What's interesting is that no one at the party—all experienced parents—thought to caution us about the candle," confides Morley. Normally vigilant parents can easily become distracted from safety issues at birthday celebrations. And these events can pose serious risks from the cake candle to the small plastic toys often found in goodie bags. The distractions add up when you have other children and parents attending the festivities too. Look over some of the top birthday hazards to make sure that your child's special day stays happy, not hazardous.

Food

"There are so many food items that are considered unsafe until a child reaches the age of 4," says Dr. Christine Wood, pediatrician and author of How to Get Kids to Eat Great & Love It. She lists popular party foods such as hot dogs, grapes, hard candy, popcorn, chunks of cheese, meat, carrots, celery, taffy, dried fruits, marshmallows, and others as posing choking risks.
Dr. Wood advises some simple precautions to avoid problems. First, make sure that the children attending the party—including the birthday child—sit while eating. "Almost any food can become a choking hazard if children are running around or laughing." Second, avoid known choking foods or make sure these foods are cut into small pieces.
Choking is a serious hazard for little kids. According to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 17,537 children visited emergency rooms around the country in 2001 with nonfatal choking problems. Of those choking incidences, 60 percent were from food items, 31 percent were from nonfood items, and 9 percent were from unknown substances.
If a child does appear to be choking, either because he is unable to breathe, breathing is labored, or he's turning color, Dr. Bryan Burke, a pediatrician at the Arkansas Children's Hospital, relays the importance of parents reacting quickly. Sometimes the child is still able to breathe while the object is lodged in the airway, but if a child's breathing is blocked completely, you have only four minutes before the lack of oxygen will lead to death, says Dr. Burke.
Dr. Burke, along with the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests parents take a CPR course and familiarize themselves with how to react in emergency situations.
Additionally, when planning the party, ask parents of party guests if their children have any food allergies so that you can avoid serving those foods or restrict the food to certain areas.

Toys

Like small pieces of food, tiny toys can also put your child at risk of choking. Opt for party favors that are large enough that they cannot be swallowed. Dr. Wood explains that any item that can fit through a toilet paper roll can potentially fit in your child's mouth and create airway problems.
Remember that gifts your child receives may be unsuitable for your child's age—such as a toy intended for preschoolers with small parts. Tuck these gifts away and save them for your child to enjoy once she's old enough.

Decorations and Wrappings

With all the party excitement, you may not realize that some common party items—such as gift-wrapping and balloons—can prevent breathing if inhaled or swallowed. Dr. Burke recalls vividly a case where he was called to remove a balloon from a child's throat. Unfortunately, the four-year-old died before ever reaching the hospital.
While you don't have to ban balloons from your festivities altogether, be careful where you place them. Tape balloons high above children's heads and don't let anyone play with them. Save balloon animals until children are older and won't place the balloons in their mouths.
Gather up wrapping paper, ribbons, and packaging as soon as your child is done opening gifts. Remember that you're not just trying to ensure your own child's safety, but also that of other children attending the party.

Your House

Take a childproofing tour of your house. This is a great time to check between couch cushions and under beds for hazardous items. "Small things like marbles, watch batteries, pen caps, or buttons can be a real choking problem," says Dr. Wood. Reinstall childproofing devices such as outlet covers and gates at stairs if necessary.
Before the party, determine where guests will put their coats and purses. Dr. Wood points out that many items that a child might stumble onto in a purse left on the floor can be dangerous, such as medications, keys, or pocket knives.
If you have a family pool, there must be at least one adult who will stay in the pool for the entire event and watch the children. If your pool is covered, lock outside doors or pool gates so that children will not find their way into your pool and drown.

Have Fun—Get Help!

Parties are supposed to be fun, not stressful. If you are aware of common party dangers you'll be better able to prevent an accident and enjoy your child's special day. Perhaps the best celebration advice comes from pediatrician Dr. Dan McGee, of the DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan: "Don't do it all yourself. Find someone or hire a babysitter to help you manage the party, especially if you are expecting a lot of guests." Now, who's ready to party?

Invitations to Help Make Your Wedding Perfect

When you get married there is an awful lot to keep track of and a lot that can go wrong. If you are planning your wedding right now, then you probably don't need to be reminded of that fact and are all too aware of the numerous pressures on your time.

One thing it's important not to forget though is the paper element of your wedding. This means the invitations and it means the save the date cards and these all serve various important functions that can help your wedding to go more smoothly and that can help you to avoid potential difficulties and even save money.

Your invitation should not just be a piece of paper with the time and date on it, and it is possible to get much more from this little piece of card - so much so that it improves the entire function. Here we will look at how that's the case.

Save the Dates

No, invitations are not just a piece of paper with a date on them - that's what Save the Dates are for and these are highly useful cards for making sure that you get the maximum number of people in attendance for your wedding. A save the date is basically the first point of contact telling people when your wedding will be long in advance before you necessarily have the venue etc. sorted out. This in turn allows them to book the time off and it ensures that everyone can make it to your big day. More importantly it allows people who already can't make it to inform you before it's too late to do anything about it - so if your best man is in another country or your Mum is having her wedding this day you can change it before it's too late. It also allows you to get an idea of numbers very early on in the planning stages which means you can better pick the best venue etc. and it means you can opt to invite more people if you wish in the next round of invites.

The Perfect Invitations

Then when your invitations do go out, this is where you will include extra information. The main intention here is to get people excited about your day and that's why it's important to use an attractive and a fitting design. Make sure you think this through carefully and a picture can help to add that personal touch.

At the same time this is also a great way to get more information from people. For instance you can get orders for your catering and this gives you catering services plenty of time to start making the food and means that there will be minimum waste and confusion later on. You can also let them this way inform you of any allergies or other special requirements.

Finally you can also use these vintage wedding invitations in order to make requests for wedding gifts if you feel so inclined so that you get things you actually need and recoup some of the expense of your wedding.

Choosing Bridal Shower Invitation Themes

Bridal showers are no longer restricted to traditional teas or sedate afternoon gatherings, and modern brides and bridesmaids can use their creativity to choose an offbeat theme. Consider today’s popular bridal shower themes that will get guests in the mood to celebrate.

Luau Bridal Shower Theme

A luau theme is perfect for a summer bridal shower or for a bride whose honeymoon destination is tropical. To set the tone, select bridal shower invitations that reflect a tropical mood, such as a turquoise background with a vibrant hibiscus flower border.

You can welcome guests with leis and invite them to wear tropical colors. If you have the outdoor space, consider hosting the bridal shower beneath colorful umbrellas, with the food tables covered in deep pink tablecloths and strewn with flowers.

Wild West Bridal Shower Theme

Whether the bride-to-be is from the west or just loves John Wayne movies, consider a western theme. You could send Wild West bridal shower invitations asking guests wear western attire. Or you might choose invitations featuring a cowgirl on a horse swinging a lasso that contains the cheap bridal shower invitation wording.

You can also consider inviting guests on a trail ride at a local farm offering horseback riding for private parties. For a more budget-friendly affair, you could invite guests to a Wild West backyard barbeque. The future bride could wear a sheriff’s star and a colorful cowgirl hat to set the tone.

Sophisticated Cocktail Theme

For a more intimate and formal bridal shower, you might consider a cocktail theme and ask guests to dress up and prepare for a cocktail party or an elegant dinner. You could send black bridal shower invitations with shimmering champagne glasses doused in white glitter to denote the formality of an evening shower. Then, depending on the number of guests, you might hire a limo to drive everyone to a fancy restaurant where you laugh and toast the bride-to-be over a sumptuous dinner.

Roses are Red Theme

The underlying theme of most weddings is love, which could lead to a roses are red romantic bridal shower theme. Your bridal shower invitations could be deep red and shaped like a heart, preparing guests for a sappy, romantic shower. You could watch a romantic comedy, share romantic stories about the bride and her fiancé, and gorge on dark chocolate and champagne, all the while surrounded by bouquets of red roses and carnations.

Indulgent Spa Theme What future bride couldn’t use a day of relaxation and pampering to help ease the stress of planning her wedding? A spa theme is the perfect way to unwind and enjoy the company of good friends. You could send ivory bridal shower invitations showing a girl in a fluffy robe, inviting guests to a spa shower. Many spas will offer package deals, giving you the freedom to choose as little or as long an event as you please. After the pampering, you might gather at a local restaurant for a post-spa meal or head to someone’s home to continue the fun.

There are almost limitless possibilities for choosing a bridal shower theme. Just have fun and select a theme that matches the bride’s personality for a shower no one will soon forget.

Wedding Tips On A Budget

When planning your wedding, there are many ways to enjoy a memorable event on a budget. From saving on wedding reception venues to cutting costs on flowers, you don't have to spend a fortune to have an enjoyable wedding.

Bridal Apparel

There are many ways to save on your gown and your bridal party's apparel. Shop for your wedding gown during the off-season. Avoid months like May, June and September. These months are the most popular for weddings and you will find few sale items. Winter months like January and February are the best times to find the best deals on wedding gowns and formal dresses.

Food

Often the biggest expense when it comes to weddings, food can really put a dent in your budget. Save money by serving a light meal or having a cake and punch reception. A brunch or breakfast reception is also a great way to take the bite out of food costs. Hire a student caterer instead of a large company. You will find significant savings by cutting out expensive catered meals.

Flowers

Flowers can also be a huge part of your wedding budget. These prices can add up quickly, from the bridal bouquet to the wedding party's flowers, the ceremony decor and the reception site flowers. Save money by taking advantage of natural decor. Enjoy an outdoor garden wedding or a beachfront ceremony. Mix in silk flowers with live ones to save even more. There are many independent crafters who will design a breathtaking wedding bouquet for a fraction of the price of your florist. Take advantage of this and save money on flowers.

The Reception Venue

The reception venue is often a huge budget gobbler. Save money by booking your reception at a site that allows outside catering. This way you can save on food costs while enjoying an elegant wedding. Many sites have function rooms that can be made smaller or expanded to accommodate your guests. Take advantage of these by decreasing the size of your reception room for instant savings.

Photography

Wedding photography can be very expensive. The best photographers can produce breathtaking images, but may charge high prices. Save money by booking your photographer for your wedding ceremony only. Have a friend shoot the photos at your ceremony. This can add up to a huge cost savings. With major retailers offering low cost printing, you can enjoy large, professional-quality prints at a fraction of the cost.

From flowers to photos, there are many ways to save on your wedding costs, you only have to work with your budget without sacrificing what you want for this very special occasion in your life.

How To Dress for a Wedding

One of my favorite things to receive in the mall is wedding invitations. Every time I receive them I feel a wave of excitement hit me as I think about all the great food, celebration of love, and fun that comes along with it.
However, I often find myself debating what to wear to a wedding as a wedding guest. You never want to upstage a bride, match the color of the bridesmaids or look trashy. Your goal should be to follow the theme of the party, look classy and beautiful but how do you do that?

Dress Up

Unless the invitation strictly says that the wedding is themed and you have to wear a specific causal outfit like a bathing suit (beach bum wedding) or jeans and a cowboy hat (western wedding), you should always dress up.

If your invitation reads casual, you should still pull out a nice cocktail dress and a pair of heels. You should never walk into a wedding in shorts, jeans, a t-shirt, sneakers, or fashion emergency crocs and uggs. Those items are a no to a wedding, some a no to everyday life, and should not be worn at such a beautiful celebration.
So for casual go cocktail, semi-formal knee-length and formal means ball gown baby. It’s always better to overdress than underdress, just don’t overdo it with too many accessories and look like you want the attention on you.

Location & Colors

There are two very important clues on your invitation that will help you choose the correct outfit: the location and the color scheme. If the location is someplace like a beach you will know a short dress will work in your favor, where as if the location is a grand hall, you will be able to get away with a flowing gown.

Brides always show hints of their color scheme in the invitations, so play off of what you see. Do not match the colors exactly, because chances are the wedding party will be in those colors. Instead look for hues that go well with the color scheme, or wear something that is in the same color scheme family. For example, if the invitation is gold and navy blue wear a dress that is nude or twilight blue.
Do not wear white, do not think about white, and do not even look at white. That is off-limits and for the bride only. Don’t even wear silver, or anything too shimmery, because again the attention should be on the bride. Anything that screams “Look at me” should be avoided.

Wedding shower etiquette: How too many showers can drain your guests

Are you planning on getting married in the near future?  If so, congratulations!  The celebrations of a man and woman joining their lives through holy matrimony can be joyous and exhilarating.  The costs, however, of joining in pre-wedding celebrations can be nothing for guests in attendance of the occasions to feel joyous about.  In this day and age where it is common for engaged couples to plan large and elaborate weddings, the expectation is that the guests who attend bridal showers and Jack and Jill parties should be gently pressured to “do their part” and provide financial donations towards the happy couple’s big day.  Couples who are getting married need to understand that their guests are not obligated to finance the weddings and lifestyles of the newlyweds simply because they rsvp’d their attendance to the wedding.

Bridal showers are quite common in Canada, the United States of America and in Australia, but people living in other countries in the world do not typically observe the custom of hosting bridal showers.  The bridal shower is typically attended by women who are close to the bride.  The bride might also choose to invite female family members and co-workers of the groom.  Bridal showers are supposed to be about giving tips and advice to the bride about what to expect from marriage and showing support.  However, more than just congratulatory words are expected at bridal showers now.  Many engaged couples make sure that guests know which store they are registered at for gifts.  If guests attending showers do not show up with gifts, the guests are sure to be whispered about behind their backs about how cheap and inconsiderate they are.
People who are getting married usually get so caught up planning the wedding that they forget to realize that the invited guests have other responsibilities and priorities than attending expensive weddings and showers.  Wedding showers used to be only centered on the bride and the female guests of the wedding.  Nowadays, it is becoming increasingly common for men to be including in pre-wedding festivities at Jack and Jill parties, which are unisex wedding parties.  The purpose of a Jack and Jill party is to raise funds for the bride and groom before the wedding, and guests are usually charged a fee to attend.  What many engaged couples forget to remember is that the wedding guests already feel obligated
to give a gift at the wedding.  Not everyone can afford to give a gift at a bridal shower, a separate gift at a Jack and Jill party, and a separate gift at the wedding.
Not only is it expensive to attend wedding showers, it is time-consuming.  As happy as many people are for their loved ones who are getting married, they are bored and irritated at being pressured to attend showers where predictable events like games and gift-giving take place.  Many newly married couples are two-income families.  They likely already have pots, pans, towels, linens and many of the items that they requested in their wedding registry.  Why should friends, co-workers and family members have to feel pressured to give newlyweds more items when they themselves might be financially struggling?
Guests need to pay for their clothes, gifts for the newlyweds, transportation to and from the wedding and the reception and the parties.  Some guests take time off from work in order to be able to attend these events and the most they will get in return is a modest gift, a thank you card and a wedding photo from the bride and groom.  Not only are the guests in attendance under pressure to spend a lot of money at weddings, the bridal party are under pressure too.  The groomsmen and bridesmaids are expected to go out of their way to spend their money and time helping the engaged couple plan events even though these individuals have their own lives and business to attend to.  When planning your wedding, keep in mind that your guests are under no obligation to provide you with gifts, attend all of your showers and cater to your wedding whims.  The fact that your guests are showing support to you by attending your wedding should be thanks enough.

Baby Shower Theme: Rubber Ducky - Food & invitation

Rubber Ducky, You're the One...

The rubber ducky baby shower theme is great for a shower of any size. It can be used and adapted for a boy, girl, multiples, or a gender-neutral shower.

Rubber Ducky Food

Coming up with ideas for food for any type of engagement can seem tedious. To get the ball rolling, here are a few fantastic ideas for baby shower food that follows the Rubber Ducky theme:
  • Cake. A must have no matter what, a rubber ducky cake sets this shower apart! Get creative with molds, fondant, and flavors. The one pictured above is two layers - a round cake as the base/bottom covered in fondant, and a molded ducky as the top layer.
  • Cupcakes. A nice alternative to cake, or a wonderful accompaniment, cupcakes are easy to make and fun to decorate! The ones pictured to the right are chocolate with a mint filling, topped with butter cream icing (colored blue), chocolate balls (bubbles), and rubber ducky cake toppers.
  • Rubber Ducky Punch. As lovers of pinterest know, creative recipes are endless, and punch is no exception! Float rubber duckies on top for a nice, "awwing" touch!
  • Tea sandwiches. Grab a ducky shaped cookie cutter from a local craft or cake store, and use it to cut bread for sandwiches. Once you have the cute bread, the options for fillings are endless!
  • Cookies. Using the same cookie cutter as did for the tea sandwiches, make sugar cookies. Use colored icing for the finish, along with treats and candies for the ducky's eyes. Adding blue-colored candy along the bottom of the cookie would give the feel of the ducky being in water/bubbles.

Invitations

Baby shower invitations should be simple and fun, but give the recipient a little mystery about the event and an idea of the theme. Hint at the theme, or make it very apparent, whichever the mom/host prefers. Use craft tools and supplies to create ducky shaped invitations, print some off of the internet, or find some from the local grocery or hobby store. If wanting to be subtle, use traditional invitations (or make/print some), and let the theme come to life through simple words. At the top, it could read: "Rubber Ducky, You're the One. Little Boys/Girls are Oh-So-Fun!", "Quack! Quack! Let's Celebrate Baby Jack!", or "Rub a dub dub. There soon will be a new baby in the tub!"

  • ...You've Made This Shower Fun!

More ideas to make a rubber ducky baby shower even more spectacular are to display a rubber ducky diaper cake, an inflatable ducky, or to have the mom wear something "duckish" during the shower, like a ducky shirt or a funny ducky robe (over her clothes).
It's a Rubber Ducky world, and this world is ready to celebrate another little one! Have fun, congratulations, and feel free to post below about experiences and ideas.

Baby food pouches: what you need to know

We've all seen or used baby food packaged in pouches. But just because the pouch has a nozzle, doesn't mean you should allow your baby to suck the food straight out.

Sucking food from pouches over a prolonged period of time may actually inhibit chewing and the progression to textured foods.
Baby food pouches

Textured foods are important for the continued development of your baby's chewing action and the muscles required for normal speech development.

Poor development of oral muscles can lead to a delay in speech development.

It is recommended that you squeeze the contents of the pouch into a bowl or spoon or attach a purpose-built spoon head to the food pouch to assist in the child’s muscle development.

Eating from a spoon
Sucking from a pouch
Encourages development of the chewing action and muscles required for speech May delay development of the natural chewing action and oral muscles
Allows your baby to stop when satisfied May not allow your baby to control food intake, increasing the risk of overeating
Allows you to progress to more textured foods Could prevent the important progression toward more textured foods
Allows the introduction of iron rich foods such as infant cereals and meats Possibly delays the introduction of iron rich foods important for brain growth and general health
Reduces the risk of choking Could create a choking hazard as food can be sucked down into the lungs

MORE FEEDING TIPS

Finger food
As soon as your baby can sit alone unsupported you can start offering some finger foods. These need to be safe, soft fruits and vegetables that have been precooked are ideal. Always stay and watch your child when they have food in their hands. Never leave a child alone with food. Gagging is normal and noisy but choking is silent.

Knockbacks are normal

It is important to keep offering babies food they may seem to have rejected at first. It can take up to 10 attempts before babies will accept a new taste. Then it may take a few tastes before they start to like it; however foods they may be reluctant to try at first can end up being their lifelong favourites!

Bland ain't bad

Unlike adults, babies don’t need highly flavoured foods. Babies have more taste buds than adults and taste foods more intensely. They can enjoy bland foods like rice cereal and most of what’s good for them early on will be comparatively bland to us. That’s not a problem, it’s a good thing: they will only eat when they’re hungry and let you know when they have had enough. Do not add salt, sugar, pre-prepared sauces or stock to your baby’s food.

Consistency is critical
Allowing children to progress from simply sucking to becoming an expert at chewing is an essential part of developing the reflexes and muscle control they need to begin speaking. There is a strong link between poor chewing and delayed speech development.
